Emergency Closings & Inclement Weather Procedures

EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

There are situations that may arise during the course of a day that may result in the school district calling for early closing, delayed opening, or school closure for the entire day. Most often, these closures are due to inclement weather, but other circumstances exist that may require such action include flooding, lack of heat or water, extremely high temperatures, and sudden or worsening storms.

In these or other instances, the district will utilize several forms of communication in order to contact parents/guardians as quickly as possible about any changes to the normal school day. The primary forms of communication include automated phone messages, e-mail messages, Facebook, and notices posted on the district’s website – www.mtps.org.

ONE-SESSION DAYS

Occasionally, it becomes necessary, once school is in session, to close before regular dismissal time. Announcements about emergency one-session days will be made utilizing the aforementioned communication systems.  Circumstances for emergency one-session days may  include but are not limited to flooding, lack of heat or water, extremely high temperatures, and sudden or worsening storms.

Emergency one-session days will follow the one-session day schedule unless you are notified otherwise.  One-session days can happen for several reasons. There are normal one-session days that are scheduled into the school calendar (example: scheduled half-days). Other one-session days are emergency related. If the need arises, you will be notified of an emergency one-session day as early as possible.

Lunches on One-Session Days:

If it is determined that there is a need for a one-session day prior to students entering the building, no lunches will be served.

If an emergency arises and there is a need for a one-session day while students are in session, lunches will be served.

YMCA Program on One-Session Days:

School Closing After Initially Announcing a Delayed Opening:

If the district determines that schools will be closed after initially announcing a delayed opening, the YMCA p.m. program will not be provided.

YMCA Program on One-Session Days For Inclement Weather:

If schools are closed early for inclement weather or for any other situation, the YMCA Y-Kids program will be open for a 1-hour period, allowing time for parents to pick up.  YMCA staff will remind parents of this policy so alternate arrangements can be made in this situation.

YMCA Program on Normal Calendar Scheduled One-Session Days (Regular Half-Days):

YMCA will operate as normal.  Please utilize the information provided to you from YMCA or for more information email them at [email protected].

YMCA Program For Delayed Openings:

If the district issues a delayed opening, the YMCA before care program will not be offered.
